In 1955 Wallace Groves who was a Virginian Financier had lumber interests in Grand Bahamas. He was granted 50,000 acres to develop the Freeport area. Since then Freeport has become the 2nd most populous city in the Bahamas. Wallace and his wife were responsible for building the beautiful Groves Botanic Gardens.
